Questions, answered
The questions we get most, answered plainly. More on the full FAQ page.
What are Grok bots?
Grok bots are custom assistants built on xAI's Grok platform. A creator writes instructions (a persona plus rules), publishes the bot, and anyone can open it and chat with it in one click at x.ai/bot. Think of them as one-click personalities for Grok: a coding reviewer, an inbox triage assistant, a research intern - each tuned for one job.
How do I open a Grok bot?
Every bot on GrokBot HQ has an Open button that links to x.ai/bot. Click it, sign in with your X account, and the bot opens in Grok ready to use. You don't need to configure anything - the creator's instructions are already built in.
Are Grok bots free to use?
Opening and using Grok bots requires a Grok account; availability may depend on your subscription tier. The bots themselves are free to open - the creators don't charge per bot. GrokBot HQ is free to browse, always.
Is GrokBot HQ affiliated with xAI?
No. GrokBot HQ is an independent directory maintained by fans of the Grok bot ecosystem. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by xAI. Grok is a trademark of xAI, used here for identification purposes only.
How are bots reviewed before being listed?
Every submission is reviewed by hand. We open each bot, test it against three real prompts from its category, and check that the instructions match the description. Bots that spam, impersonate people, or don't work as described are rejected. About 8 in 10 submissions make it in.
How do I submit my Grok bot to the directory?
Use the Submit page: paste your bot's x.ai/bot link, pick a category, and describe what it does in one sentence. Reviews usually take 48 hours. Listing is free; a featured placement is available for builders who want the top slot.
What makes a good Grok bot?
Three things: one job done well, instructions with explicit rules (not just a personality), and a clear 'you'll like this if…' pitch. The best bots we list do a single task - triage an inbox, review a PR - and state exactly what they will and won't do.
Can I build a Grok bot for free?
Yes - xAI's bot builder at x.ai/bot lets you create a bot by writing instructions in plain English. No code required. Our guide 'How to Create a Grok Bot' walks through the whole process in about ten minutes.
